King of my Castle (apartment)

10.25.05 (12:54 pm)   [edit]

That's right. I have passed one more test on the gauntlet that is manhood: I made steak and potatoes for dinner last night. Nevermind that I had to call home and ask how long to cook the potatoes. The fact is that I made some kickin' rosemary red russett potatoes.

And nevermind that the olive oil on the steaks caught fire in the oven and warped the cookie sheet I was using (that's all I had to broil the steaks on). Sure, I had to turn on the overhead fan, open the kitchen window and the sliding-glass door, and take the battery out of the smoke detector so the neighbors wouldn't think I was truly burning the place down...but I made some pretty good steaks. I prefer a perfectly medium steak; these came out medium-well. That's what I get for flame broiling. (Oh well, nothing a little Worschester Sauce can't fix.)

The best part of my manly meal for one was that it only cost me $5. I got the half-pound of top sirloin at the Co-op for $3.17 and the four potatoes for $2-something. I love being a member of the Co-op; I recommend looking for one near you. The only thing better than buying cheap, healthy, tasty food is eating that cheap, healthy, tasty food.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to plan tonight's adventure. I mean dinner.

I worked for ESPN

10.17.05 (11:48 am)   [edit]

Ask me what I did this weekend. Do you want to know? Well, you know, there was the typical stay up late on Friday watching a movie, and the sleeping in on Saturday, and I wandered over to the frisbee golf course (which sucks compared to L-Town), and I had dinner with Frog (Cassie for all you non-Camp-K people). Nothing too exciting. Oh, and I guess there was something else, but it's minor and boring. I worked for Security for ESPN on Quest Field during the Seahawks game Sunday night. (!!!)

It was so SWEET! DIRT, the men's ultimate team that I joined, does security work with CSC in order to raise money for our trips and whatnot. So we loaded up some cars and drove down on Sunday morning. We showed up and got yellow security jackets and they started pairing up half of the people there with people who do standard security work at the stadium. I wasn't picked during the first or second round of job assignments (very reminiscient of my kickball days) but that turned out to be a good thing. Those guys ending doing alcohol enforcement or entrace ticketing and frisking--the "no-fun, crowd hates me, I can't watch the game" kind of jobs. Once the crowd of 100 or so was weaseled down to 13 of us, the Boss Man came up and said, "You guys will be going on the field tonight. You'll need to be down there at 3:30 so you can chill until then." SWEET!

Once on the field I was told that I would be following an ESPN field camera man named Steve. Steve showed up around 4:30 and looked just like the Big Lebowski: khaki shorts, orange high top Chuck, floppy hair. He moved all over the field filming the game, the crowd, the announcers on the field, the coaches...and I got to be there for all of it!

If you didn't watch the game, Shawn Alexander scored 4 touchdowns last night; I was on the goal line for 3 of them. (It was beautiful Alan. Don't cry too hard.)

But, alas, I can't wallow in the moment for too long because now I have to go run around chasing frisbees in the rain. Yea for practice.

Texas is just full of used CARR salesman,

Winter, please come sooner

10.09.05 (3:49 pm)   [edit]

Can you feel it? It's getting colder. (I love it!) I got to be the typical PNW college student this week: I got caught in the rain wearing hiking socks and Chaco's; thankfully I was wearing a black soft-shell jacket so I stayed rather dry; and I escaped into the library and checked out a laptop with wireless and found a comfy couch on which to check my e-mail. To bad I wasn't drinking a coffee to complete the ultimate Seattle-ite picture. (But I do drive a Subaru.)

Speaking of my Subaru, I drove it up to the local movie theater in the mall to see the new Wallace and Grommit movie yesterday. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie; it's classic Wallace and Grommit humor. If I wasn't already busy tonight I'd go see it again. But in this technological age I can just wait until Christmas and there will probably be a boxed set of all the W & G films. (Santa, I know it's pretty early for a Wish List, but please put this on mine. I've been a good student this year.)

Speaking of Santa (and winter and snow), I have caught The Fever. No, not Red Fever. No, not the one you get from living in the dorms. The SNOW Fever. I want snow and I want it now. I made it all summer without longing for that feeling of floating in the Steep and Deep, but that just means that it hit me harder when I finally got it. So don't come too close to me or you catch The Fever too. (If you do, then can I bum a ride up to the slopes?)

My first bezerk week

10.03.05 (10:45 am)   [edit]

Sure, last week was a full week of class, but this week is actually FULL. It will be a true test of my scheduling abilities. Besides classes, I have Ultimate practice on Mon/Wed/Fri, Fencing club meet on Tuesdays, Wednesday night there is a slide show about Sherpas in Nepal that I'd like to see, and Friday nights is CCF (Campus Christian Fellowship). Let's see if I can really hold down "The College Life."

In Sports this week: Alan, you need not worry about the Silvertips this year. My dad turned 51 on Saturday so we went to the home-opener for the Tips. The Tips sent the Cougars back to Canada with their tail between their legs.

1st Period: Everett had great defense and warded off several shots on goal all while keeping the puck in Cougar territory. Score 1-0
2nd Period: Both teams did a lot of jostling for position during this period but were unfruitful in reaching the net. However, the Cougars looked tired of being on the defense as the Tips kept shooting. Score 1-0
3rd period: Amazing hockey. The Cougs scored on a breakaway 30 seconds in but managed to quickly send a player to the penalty box, which the Tips turned into a goal. Score 2-1. Like True Canadian hockey players, the Cougs spent the rest of the game in and out of the box and basically handed the tips the game. Final Score 5-2.

I hope that didn't bore all of you non-sports fans out there. But I'm really starting to like local hockey. I think it's the best spectator sport out there because it's fast paced, violent, it takes skill, and it's violent. And hockey fans are just plain bezerk.

Go Bezerk for something this week. It's fun.
